Fossil Fuel Supply and Climate Leadership: A call to constrain oil, gas, and coal production to achieve the Paris Goals

There is enough carbon in the world’s already operating oil, gas, and coal fields and mines to take us beyond 1.5°C or 2°C of warming. For the world to stay within climate limits agreed to in the Paris agreement, fossil fuel production must be addressed.

The Lofoten Declaration, an international call for action on fossil fuel supply, is rapidly becoming a rallying point globally on climate change and in the halls of COP 23. It affirms that it is the urgent responsibility and moral obligation of wealthy fossil fuel producers to lead in putting an end to fossil fuel exploration and expansion and to manage the decline of existing production.

The conference will introduce a new brief by Stockholm Environment Institute on how to address fossil fuel supply within the UNFCCC, as well as research from Oil Change International showing how fossil fuel production will take us beyond climate limits. Statements will be made by High Level Delegates, academics, and indigenous leaders.
